about me

I paint portraits from life in oil and pastel, and am mainly based between Lincolnshire and London.

I hold a degree in music which includes art history and I have also attended contemporary fine art courses and life drawing and painting practice at London art colleges under excellent tutors.

I have taught drawing on art foundation course, and occasionally run drawing and painting workshops and short courses.

I work mainly by commission but also for my own pleasure. I have exhibited with the Lincolnshire Artists' Society and with the RBA at the Mall Gallery, London.

I am equally at home painting board room portraits for corporations or family portraits, either quick sketches or more extended, or developed work. I have painted royalty, and I very much enjoy the many portraits of children that I do. I also paint animals, and some of my work is in publication as limited edition prints. I also paint still life and landscapes.

One of my mottos is 'Work is love made visible'. I love working with and for people to create something that will give pleasure. Portrait painting is for me a combination of joy and discipline. It can perhaps be likened to the practice of the Japanese Zen monks who played Shakuhachi flutes as a Zen meditation aid – extremely difficult to do, and yet intended to sound as natural as the wind blowing in a bamboo grove. Portrait painting is like walking a tightrope – one hopes that it will be both a good likeness and a good painting. But how it turns out is also the result of the collaboration between artist and sitter. If someone really wants to be painted and enjoys it, all the better.

I am always eager to paint willing sitters, and for people who are seeking something unique to treasure.

I hope you enjoy looking at my work.
